true in a sense, but machines have been replaced by computers. the new tinkering class does all of their work in virtual environs...

When I worked in Ottawa with a Mass Spec machine, I was disheartened to learn that no one - not even my boss himself - knew absolutely everything about the unit. TH Dixon used the same analogy about the CERN particle accelerator in Geneva in "The ingenuity Gap". But you knew that already, b/c that's your turf ;)
